Nutrition Counseling and Education Benefit Now Available

The New Jersey Division of Medical Assistance and Health Services (DMAHS) has developed a Nutrition Counseling and Education benefit for New Jersey Medicaid Managed Long Term Services and Supports (MLTSS) beneficiaries. This benefit was approved via a Section 1115 Demonstration Waiver and became effective on July 1, 2025.
Providers interested in delivering services related to the Nutrition
Counseling and Education benefit are required to staff a Registered Dietician or Registered Dietician Nutritionist with a current registration on file with the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
Qualified providers should bill the following HIPAA-compliant procedure
codes for this benefit:
- 97802U1: Medical nutrition therapy; initial assessment and intervention, individual, face-to-face with the patient, each 15
minutes. This code is used for the first visit with a qualified nutrition professional. The provider will assess the condition, perform a nutrition screen, and initiate a dietary plan that is specific to the patient’s needs. - 97803U1: Medical nutrition therapy; reassessment and intervention, individual, face-to-face with the patient, each 15 minutes. This code is for the subsequent visit after the initial visit has been completed. The provider reevaluates the diet in such a way that it improves the health and quality of life of the patient and advises the patient about long-term eating habits and health.
- 97804U1: Medical nutrition therapy; group (2 or more individuals), each 30 minutes.
